Using a gallery is a handy way to showcase your pictures to your visitors. Thankfully, in WordPress, trying to create tiled galleries is not at all a difficult task. With some effort, you can easily create gorgeous and stunning tiled galleries with your images using Jetpack.
In this article, we will be learning how to create tiled galleries using Jetpack.
Create Tiled Galleries Using Jetpack
Before going any further, you will need to install and activate the Jetpack plugin. It comes loaded with a wide variety of features, such as site stats, brute force attack protection, social sharing, and a lot more. We will be focusing only on the tiled galleries feature.
Setting up the Gallery
Once you have Jetpack up and running, the tiled gallery feature is part of the recommended list of modules, and is generally activated automatically when you opt for the recommended configuration.
Thereafter, you simply need to start adding your posts or pages wherein you wish to showcase the gallery.
In the WordPress editor, click on Add Media. Then, select Create Gallery.
You will now need to upload the images or choose existing ones from your Media Library. Once you have finalized the images that will form part of your gallery, you will be able to edit the gallery.
By editing the gallery, we mean either or all of the following:
- You can drag and drop images to reorder their sequence. Alternatively, you can simply choose to show images in a random order.
- You can provide captions, alt texts, descriptions and titles for your images.
However, to create a tiled gallery, in the “type” field, you will need to select either Tiled Mosaic or Tiled Column.
Once done, you can simply save or publish the post, and then see your tiled gallery in action!
That’s all. We have just created a simple tiled gallery using Jetpack.
Points Worth Noting
In order to create a tiled gallery using Jetpack, you will need to use Jetpack’s image caching service (that is, service images from the WP.com cloud servers). Once you activate the tiled gallery module, Jetpack will automatically activate image caching as well.
You can also choose to make all your galleries tiled by default. Simply head to Settings → Media and then select “Display all your gallery pictures in a cool mosaic”.
By default, all tiled galleries will fit your theme’s content width. All modern WP themes play well with Jetpack Tiled Gallery feature, so you probably will have nothing to worry about here. Just in case your theme does not support tiled galleries, Jetpack will place tiled galleries fixed at 500 pixels in width.
Conclusion
Creating a tiled gallery using Jetpack is fairly easy. All you need to do is add the images and then specify the type of gallery that you want. Jetpack handles the rest for you.
Using a gallery can be a good way to showcase your images if such images are mutually related. For personal blogs, these can be pertaining to a specific type of content. On the other hand, portfolio sites can make good use of tiled galleries as well. For instance, a photographer can use tiled galleries to showcase his or her work easily. Jetpack also supports showing EXIF metadata, so you can be sure that your images will not be left out of any crucial details.
